MOM'S MUSINGS             MAGICKAL ETHICS
Susan Davis©2000

As magickal energy wielders we have a responsibility to insist on certain levels of behavior, with love, tolerance, understanding and firm gentle insistence.

It is up to us to be aware of the times when magick is the appropriate choice...and to know when it is simply the lazy way to try to get what we want.  Magick only works for us when we also do something in the physical plane to start the flow of energy, and the Elemental Gods are loath to support those who have not done the footwork before the circle works.  If you need money, for example, and have failed to make any effort to earn it...you are unlikely to conjure it up magickally unless you are willing to sacrifice something of value for it.  I have never had such a great need for money that I was willing to simply demand it, for I have always known full well that to do so Earth might well take a family member from me so that I can inherit.  Just not a price worth paying, in my book!

If you call magick TO you it must flow FROM somewhere else within this plane.  This is why most experienced witches find themselves performing fewer and fewer spells that are not nurturing (such as healing).  As we learn and grow, we see so many more options for non-magickal solutions that spelling up something becomes more effort (and more risky) than putting sweat equity into our needs.  As we mature in our spiritual selves and our magick becomes more ingrained within us, the universe becomes a web of possibilities that open before us...and magickal energy is the trickiest way to acheive ordinary physical desires and needs...so we find that we often come up with practical solutions before magickal ones.

Part of our magickal ethics as mature beings is to also guide others who are seeking, even if they seem to mock or belittle us at the first.  Many creatures who feel fear react aggresively, and mankind is no exception.  Especially in young people who are accustomed to being treated as having little real value do you see this.  But, often, after a short time of getting serious answers to their attempts to hurt...they settle down and begin to ask the true questions that they have...and then is your opportunity to enlighten and empower another being.

Take the time to think first, then act; to choose the physical path over the magickal path whenever possible; to encourage rather than belittle; to learn as well as teach; and to act from love and with joy in your Spirit...and that joy will build a bridge where harsh words can never go.
